Work on Karachi’s long-delayed Green Line bus project is finally set to restart after renewed engagement between the federal authorities and the city administration. The decision comes following a detailed meeting between the Pakistan Infrastructure Development Company Limited (PIDCL) team and Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab, during which key concerns were addressed.
Federal Delegation Assures Timely Completion of Remaining Stretch
Officials confirmed that the meeting focused on the unfinished 1.8-kilometre section of the corridor between Numaish Chowrangi and Municipal Park near Jama Cloth Market. This segment has remained incomplete for years and has slowed the overall progress of the project.
PIDCL briefed the mayor on the construction plan for the remaining portion. The team committed to finishing the work within one year. They also discussed the development of three new stations along this central stretch. These additions aim to improve access and enhance the corridor’s overall utility.
Mayor Directs Immediate Resumption After Six Years of Delays
After receiving assurances, the mayor instructed the federal representatives to restart work without delay. He emphasised the need to avoid any further interruptions. The Green Line project first began in 2016. However, the project has faced repeated pauses, resulting in a prolonged six-year delay.
The mayor stressed that the city needs efficient mass transit solutions. Therefore, completing this project has become a priority for local authorities.
Three New Stations to Strengthen Central Corridor Connectivity
Sources confirmed that a final decision has been made to add three new stations to the corridor. These stations are expected to ease travel across a busy segment of the city. The Green Line was designed to accommodate approximately 300,000 passengers daily. The additional stations may improve service quality and coverage.
Officials noted that these updates will help reintegrate the project into the city’s wider transport plans. The enhancements also aim to make the route more accessible for communities living along the central stretch.
Formal Announcement Expected Soon
The mayor and the PIDCL delegation are expected to make a formal announcement regarding the resumption of work on Monday. The update will outline construction timelines and highlight measures to ensure uninterrupted progress.
The restart of the Green Line project marks a significant development for Karachi’s public transport system. With renewed commitments and a clear timeline, the city may finally see progress on a project that has been stalled for far too long.
