Jordan’s King Abdullah II ibn Al Hussein arrived in Pakistan on Saturday for a two-day official visit, spanning November 15–16. He was warmly welcomed at the PAF Base Nur Khan in Rawalpindi by President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.
Official Welcome Ceremony
The arrival ceremony also included First Lady Aseefa Bhutto-Zardari, PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari, and senior government officials. King Abdullah II was received with formal honors and protocol, highlighting the importance of the visit.
President Zardari expressed hope that the visit would “give bilateral relations a new strategic dimension.” He emphasised the historical brotherhood, mutual trust, and shared values that form the foundation of Pakistan-Jordan ties.
After the welcome, King Abdullah II proceeded to the Prime Minister House, where he was presented with a Guard of Honour. The ceremonial reception underscored the longstanding diplomatic relationship between the two nations.
Planned Bilateral Meetings
During his visit, King Abdullah II is scheduled to hold a bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. This will be followed by discussions at the delegation level, focusing on enhancing strategic, economic, and cultural cooperation.
Additionally, a special investiture ceremony at the Aiwan-e-Sadr (President House) is scheduled. During this event, Pakistan will confer its highest civilian award upon King Abdullah II, reflecting the significance of his visit.
Focus on Defence and Security Cooperation
The visit follows a recent trip to Jordan by Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff, Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir. During that visit, Field Marshal Munir met King Abdullah II and other Jordanian military leaders to discuss defence and security collaboration. This highlights a continuing effort to strengthen military cooperation between both countries.
Expectations and Significance of the Visit
Observers note that King Abdullah II’s visit is likely to deepen bilateral relations in multiple areas. Both nations aim to reinforce diplomatic, strategic, and economic partnerships. Moreover, the visit is expected to pave the way for increased cooperation in defence, trade, and cultural exchanges.
Officials stress that the historical ties between Pakistan and Jordan, based on trust and shared values, provide a solid platform for this enhanced cooperation. The two-day visit is being closely watched for outcomes that could shape regional strategic alignment.
