Lahore has launched an ambitious Rs. 2.5 billion urban redevelopment initiative aimed at easing traffic congestion and curbing air pollution in the city’s busiest zones. The project marks a significant step toward improving environmental conditions and enhancing the overall quality of life for residents.
City authorities have prioritized areas around Data Darbar, Bhati Chowk, and Mohni Road, which experience some of the heaviest daily traffic. The Lahore Development Authority (LDA) has outlined a comprehensive plan that includes remodeling intersections, expanding roads, and improving pedestrian walkways to facilitate smoother movement and safer crossings.
Key Features of the Rs. 2.5 Billion Project
The redevelopment initiative will cover several infrastructure and beautification components. According to officials, the plan includes:
-
Remodeling of Bhati Chowk to streamline vehicle movement.
-
Creation of public sitting areas near Data Darbar for visitors’ convenience.
-
Improvement of pedestrian zones to ensure safe and organized foot traffic.
-
Road widening and façade upgrades to give the area a cleaner, more organized look.
-
Installation of new streetlights, landscaping, and signage to enhance nighttime visibility and urban appeal.
Approximately 5.5 kanal of private land and 16 kanal of state land—previously part of the old bird market—have been acquired to make room for the expansion. The cleared debris has already been removed to accelerate the redevelopment process.
Environmental and Urban Benefits
The project is designed not only to modernize city infrastructure but also to address Lahore’s worsening smog problem, particularly during winter. By improving traffic flow for over 270,000 vehicles daily, authorities expect to reduce idle time and lower carbon emissions.
Additionally, smoother traffic patterns and pedestrian-friendly spaces are expected to promote better air quality and create a more pleasant urban environment.
Officials have emphasized that the LDA will finance the project, while the Traffic Engineering and Planning Agency (TEPA) will oversee construction and ensure timely completion within eight months.
Redevelopment Beyond the City Core
The transformation does not stop at Data Darbar or Bhati Chowk. Similar plans are being finalized for other high-traffic areas such as the railway station front, Misri Shah, Aik Moria Pul, Do Moria Pul, and Circular Road. Each site will follow the same model of improving road design, pedestrian pathways, and overall aesthetics to reflect a more sustainable urban vision for Lahore.
Toward a Cleaner and More Efficient City
This large-scale project signals a turning point in Lahore’s approach to city planning. By focusing on both traffic management and environmental sustainability, the redevelopment aims to balance modernization with eco-friendly practices.
If completed as planned, the initiative could set a new precedent for other urban centers in Pakistan struggling with similar issues of congestion and pollution.
