Pakistani Doctors
KARACHI: In a remarkable display of solidarity, 2,800 Pakistani doctors have stepped forward to offer their services in Gaza, responding to a call from the Al Khidmat Foundation (AKF). Dr. Hafeezur Rehman, a 42-year-old orthopedic surgeon from Lahore, exemplifies the commitment of these volunteers, stating, “When I hear of doctors working around the clock, who don’t even have time to mourn the death of their own family members, I feel I cannot sit around and do nothing.”
Despite their readiness, logistical challenges have emerged. Egypt has yet to grant visas to the Pakistani medical team, hindering their ability to reach Gaza. Dr. Zahid Latif, head of Al Khidmat Health Foundation, emphasizes the need for both human and material resources, suggesting the establishment of a hospital-like facility at the Rafah border to provide medical treatment.
The frustration among the medical volunteers is palpable, with Dr. Rehman urging authorities to prioritize their plea. Al Khidmat Foundation is actively pursuing collaboration with international humanitarian organizations. However, the situation remains complex due to Israel’s restrictions on aid delivery to Gaza.
Caretaker Foreign Minister Jalil Abbas Jilani revealed Pakistan’s efforts to engage with Egyptian and Jordanian authorities for humanitarian assistance. Unfortunately, Israel’s obstruction has impeded initiatives, including offers of medical aid and the establishment of a hospital in Gaza.
This unfolding scenario underscores the urgency for international cooperation to address the critical conditions in Gaza, enabling the provision of essential medical aid to those in desperate need. The commitment of these Pakistani doctors exemplifies the global call for solidarity and immediate action in the face of a humanitarian crisis.
