Deepfake Videos
The Indian media is currently grappling with a growing concern – the rampant circulation of deepfake videos featuring renowned Bollywood actresses, including Alia Bhatt, Katrina Kaif, and Priyanka Chopra. These AI-generated videos are provoking criticism from fans, who are also directing their ire towards celebrities for the inappropriate content surfacing online.
Priyanka Chopra recently found herself targeted in one of these deceptive videos, where her voice was manipulated to endorse a specific brand and disclose her annual income. Actress Rashmika Mandana also faced a similar situation, taking to Instagram to clarify that an edited video portraying her in a tight dress was not authentic but rather altered with someone else’s face.
The misuse of such deepfake videos has prompted distress among actresses, leading them to call for action against those responsible for their creation and dissemination. The actresses emphasize the importance of protecting women from unwarranted harassment facilitated by these fake videos.
Even Bollywood legend Amitabh Bachchan has weighed in on the issue, stressing the need for decisive action against the creators of deepfake videos. Alia Bhatt and other actresses have also fallen victim to the circulation of fake videos, prompting widespread criticism and subsequent clarifications from journalists and fact-checkers, emphasizing the inauthenticity of these videos.
While Katrina Kaif and Kajol have faced similar incidents, they have chosen to remain silent amidst the viral spread of fake videos. Responding to these concerning developments, the Indian government has issued advisories for social media platforms, cautioning of legal repercussions and fines for those involved in propagating deepfake or immoral videos.
India’s Information Technology Minister has underscored the dangers of misinformation and the potential harm posed by such deceptive videos. The minister urges vigilance and stringent action against the creators and distributors of deepfake content, emphasizing the need to combat this emerging threat to privacy and authenticity in the digital age.
