At least nine people lost their lives and over 40 sustained injuries in a passenger bus accident in Thatta and Khairpur, as two separate buses overturned due to speeding on the National Highway. These tragic events occurred on the same day in different areas of Sindh, highlighting the recurring issue of reckless driving on Pakistan’s roads.
The first passenger bus accident in Thatta and Khairpur took place near Darsgah Muhammad Ali in Thatta, where a bus en route to Keenjhar Lake from Karachi’s Orangi Town overturned. The vehicle was reportedly carrying a group of picnickers when it lost balance due to high speed. According to rescue officials, six people were killed on the spot while more than 20 others were left injured in the tragic crash. Emergency responders used a crane to lift the damaged vehicle, and the deceased were transported back to Karachi. An Edhi Foundation representative confirmed that the victims belonged to Orangi Town and their bodies were being moved to the area’s morgue.
In a separate passenger bus accident in Thatta and Khairpur, another tragedy unfolded in Khairpur near Tando Masti, where a passenger bus traveling from Karachi to Mansehra overturned amid heavy rainfall. This second accident resulted in the deaths of three individuals, while over 25 passengers were left injured. The police stated that the injured have been shifted to the Gambat Institute of Medical Sciences (GIMS), and initial investigations indicate that speeding in poor weather conditions was the primary cause.
The frequency of a passenger bus accident in Thatta and Khairpur reflects a broader issue on Pakistan’s highways. Overspeeding, weather hazards, and driver negligence remain common contributing factors to such fatal incidents. These repeated tragedies continue to raise alarms over the safety of public transportation and highway travel across the country.
Just last week, a collision in Hasilpur between a passenger coach and a car claimed five lives from the same family, with three more injured. Similarly, on July 5, another fatal incident occurred in Muzaffargarh’s Langar Sarai area, where a bus collided with a trailer. That crash, involving a bus headed from Lahore to Ali Pur, resulted in six fatalities and 18 injuries. Like the recent passenger bus accident in Thatta and Khairpur, speeding was again identified as the probable cause.
The rising toll from every passenger bus accident in Thatta and Khairpur and elsewhere in the country underscores the urgent need for road safety reforms, better enforcement of traffic laws, and improved vehicle inspections to prevent future tragedies of such scale.
