The Lahore High Court has designated three additional judges for appellate tribunals to expedite the resolution of a substantial number of appeals related to the approval or rejection of candidates’ nomination papers.
In accordance with the election schedule, there are only four days remaining to decide numerous appeals challenging the decisions made by returning officers.
The total number of high court judges assigned to appellate tribunals in Lahore has now increased to six, following the appointment of three more judges.
The court has revealed the names of the newly nominated judges as Justice Shakeel Ahmed, Justice Tariq Nadeem, and Justice Ahmad Nadeem Arshad. These judges will be responsible for hearing appeals at the principal seat in Lahore.
The election tribunal judges will carefully consider objections and appeals lodged against the decisions made by returning officers.
A total of 1088 appeals have been lodged in the election appellate tribunals of the Lahore High Court, contesting the decisions of returning officers. Of these, 624 appeals were filed in the appellate tribunal at Lahore, while 219 appeals were submitted in Multan. Additionally, 81 appeals were filed in the Bahawalpur tribunal, and 164 appeals were registered in Rawalpindi.
The tribunals are mandated to reach decisions on these appeals by January 10, in adherence to the election schedule announced by the election commission. The polling for the upcoming election is scheduled to take place on February 08, 2024.
