The future of the much-anticipated Netflix series Building The Band, featuring Liam Payne as a mentor, is now in limbo following the tragic death of the 31-year-old singer.
Payne passed away on October 16, 2024, after falling from a third-floor balcony at a hotel in Argentina, sending shockwaves through the entertainment world and his fanbase.
According to The Sun, the production company behind Building The Band is planning to meet with Payne’s family to discuss the future of the show, which was filmed before his untimely death. Sources close to the matter have confirmed that no decision will be made regarding the release of the series without the family’s approval. Building The Band is currently scheduled to air in 2025.
A source revealed, “Netflix and the production company will meet with Liam’s family to ensure they are comfortable with the show being aired. Nothing will be finalized until they have given their blessing.”
The insider added, “This was the last project Liam worked on, and he comes across very well in the series.”
Filming for Building The Band concluded in August 2024 at Manchester’s Aviva Studios, just two months before Payne’s death. The show features Payne, alongside Nicole Scherzinger of the Pussycat Dolls and Kelly Rowland of Destiny’s Child, as mentors to a group of 50 aspiring singers who compete to form a band, all while remaining unseen by one another.
Netflix has described the series as an unscripted show where participants collaborate and face challenges to form a band, despite never meeting in person.
With the show’s premise attracting considerable attention, the production now faces the delicate task of deciding how to proceed in light of Payne’s passing. The final decision on whether to air Building The Band will depend on the approval of Payne’s family, who are set to meet with Netflix executives in the coming weeks. Fans and industry observers are waiting to see how the family will choose to handle the release of Liam Payne’s final project, with the hope of honoring his legacy.
