JUI-F spokesperson asserted on Sunday that Maulana Fazlur Rehman, the chief of JUI-F, is set to become Pakistan’s next president regardless of whether the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) or the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) secures a majority in the upcoming general elections scheduled for February next year.
The current President, Arif Alvi, saw his five-year term conclude on September 8, 2023. However, he continues to hold office under Article 44 of the Constitution, which permits the president to continue in the absence of the dissolved provincial and national assemblies.
The election of the President of Pakistan takes place in a special session of the parliament, senate, and all four provincial assemblies in accordance with Article 41(3) of the constitution.
In an interview with a local TV channel, JUI-F leader Hafiz Hamdullah argued that if Fazlur Rehman could lead the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM), a multiparty alliance, he could also become the country’s president. Hamdullah took a veiled swipe at the PPP and PML-N, accusing them of closely monitoring Balochistan’s politics.
Regarding the PTI (Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf), Hamdullah criticized the party’s agenda and dismissed any possibility of an alliance with them. He also questioned the selection of Barrister Gohar Ali Khan as the new party chairman for PTI, highlighting the controversy surrounding his nomination.
Hamdullah mentioned that JUI-F had formed an electoral alliance with the Grand Democratic Alliance (GDA) in Sindh but clarified that PTI was not part of this alliance.
