Severe Weather Batters Punjab as Authorities Warn of Urban Flooding Risk
Ongoing monsoon rains have created a critical flood situation in various parts of Punjab, claiming 143 lives so far and injuring nearly 500 individuals. According to the Punjab Disaster Management Authority (PDMA), the latest spell of heavy rainfall has caused significant damage to life and property, especially in low-lying areas and regions adjacent to the Indus River.
A fact sheet issued by PDMA revealed that medium-level flooding has been recorded at Kalabagh and Chashma on the Indus River. Though water levels in other major rivers, including the Chenab, Ravi, Jhelum, and Sutlej, remain within safe limits, the situation remains precarious due to the continuous downpour. The flood threat has also prompted heightened alerts in urban centers.
PDMA Director General Irfan Kathia issued a public warning for potential urban flooding in major cities like Lahore, Faisalabad, Sialkot, and Gujranwala, urging residents to stay cautious and avoid unnecessary travel. The report also noted the destruction of 200 houses and the loss of 121 livestock, painting a grim picture of the damage caused by the torrential rain.
Further Rain Forecasted as Monsoon Spell Continues
This marks the fourth wave of the ongoing monsoon season, which is expected to persist until July 25. Rainfall is predicted to intensify across multiple districts, including Lahore, Rawalpindi, and surrounding areas, potentially worsening the flood situation.
In response, Punjab’s chief minister has instructed all provincial departments to remain on high alert and ensure round-the-clock monitoring of flood-prone zones. Relief and rescue operations are underway, with local administration and emergency services mobilized to manage the crisis.
Authorities have advised citizens, particularly those living in low-lying or riverbank areas, to take safety precautions and stay informed through official weather updates.
