Two-Day Closure Announced as Roads Blocked and Flood Risk Rises
In response to the ongoing heavy rainfall, authorities in Murree have announced a two-day closure of all educational institutions on Tuesday, August 19, and Wednesday, August 20. The decision, confirmed by the Chief Executive Officer of the District Education Authority, comes as a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of students, teachers, and school staff.
The intense downpour over the past 24 hours has caused rivers and canals to overflow, resulting in severe water accumulation in low-lying areas such as Kahuta GPO Chowk and the Mall Road, a popular commercial and tourist zone. Emergency teams are on alert, and local authorities are working to clear blocked drainage systems and assess potential damage.
Landslides Disrupt Travel; Tourists Urged to Stay Cautious
One of the most serious consequences of the rain has been landslides in the Galiyat region, which have shut down the main highway linking Murree to Abbottabad. The road closure has not only disrupted routine traffic but also trapped several tourists in hilltop resorts and towns.
Adding to the concern, weather officials have warned of a potential cloudburst, which could significantly escalate the risk of flash floods and further landslides. In light of this, the Deputy Commissioner of Murree has issued an advisory urging residents and tourists to avoid rivers, canals, and steep slopes during this hazardous period.
The local administration has issued high-alert warnings and is closely monitoring the evolving situation. Citizens are strongly advised to stay indoors, follow official advisories, and keep updated through reliable weather alerts over the next 24 to 48 hours, as rainfall is expected to continue.
