A joint open letter has been issued by 250 Canadian non-governmental organizations (NGOs) urging Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to support the proceedings at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) concerning alleged war crimes committed by Israel in Gaza.
The National Council of Canadian Muslims (NCCM) spearheaded the appeal, calling on Canada to back the investigation into Israel’s conduct in Gaza, a move already supported by five countries: South Africa, Bangladesh, Bolivia, Comoros, and Djibouti.
The NCCM emphasized that Canada’s endorsement is crucial for an impartial investigation into possible war crimes in Gaza. The letter, signed by numerous civil society groups and community organizations, asserts that Canada must prioritize accountability and recognize the ICJ’s jurisdiction on this matter. The appeal highlights the significant loss of civilian lives, including children, due to Israel’s military actions in Gaza since the October 7 attacks.
The letter to Prime Minister Trudeau underscores the urgency of supporting the ICJ case, emphasizing the court’s role in holding states accountable under international law for the widespread violence in Gaza. It draws attention to the devastating impact of Israel’s military operations, stating that over 23,000 Palestinians have been killed in the bombardment and invasion.
The NCCM and its partners are calling on Canada to align itself with the international community in seeking justice for the alleged war crimes in Gaza and to play a constructive role in addressing the humanitarian crisis resulting from the conflict.
