Salwan Momika, the Iraqi-born man who sparked global outrage by desecrating the Holy Quran in Sweden last year, has reportedly been shot dead.
The incident occurred as a Stockholm court was set to rule on his incitement case, but proceedings were postponed following reports of his death. “One of the defendants has died,” the court confirmed in a statement without naming him explicitly.
Background & Controversy
Momika gained international notoriety in 2023 after staging multiple Quran-burning protests, triggering condemnation from Muslim-majority countries and causing diplomatic tensions for Sweden.
His most controversial act took place outside Stockholm’s largest mosque during Eid celebrations, sparking widespread protests across the Muslim world.
Originally from Iraq, he fled to Sweden in 2018 and was granted residency in 2021. However, following his inflammatory demonstrations, Swedish authorities revoked his asylum application, leading him to relocate to Norway last month.
Free Speech vs. Hate Speech Debate
Momika identified himself as a “liberal atheist critic and thinker”, asserting that his actions were an exercise in free speech. However, religious groups, human rights advocates, and international organizations widely condemned his acts as provocative and deeply offensive.
Ongoing Investigation
Swedish authorities have yet to confirm details surrounding his killing, but reports indicate that an investigation is underway.
