Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Qazi Faez Isa issued a stern warning on Saturday, stating that there may be severe consequences after law enforcement allegedly attacked the residence of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Gohar Ali Khan in Islamabad.
Gohar learned about the raid while assisting PTI’s Barrister Zafar Ali during a Supreme Court hearing on the party’s bat allotment symbol. A person informed Gohar about the incident, revealing that his sons and nephews had been assaulted, and their computer was taken.
Upon hearing the news, CJP Isa expressed dissatisfaction and summoned the additional attorney general, instructing them to address the situation. Gohar, distressed by the incident, left immediately but later returned to the apex court.
During the court proceedings, CJP Isa inquired about the situation, and Gohar described the severity of the incident. The chief justice directed the additional attorney general to resolve the matter, but Gohar expressed distrust and insisted on informing the court.
The additional attorney general assured that the home secretary and Inspector General of Islamabad Police were investigating. However, Gohar insisted on sharing the details with the court.
Meanwhile, the Islamabad police claimed they were conducting a routine operation based on information about wanted criminals at Barrister Gohar’s house. They asserted that no violence occurred, and no documents were taken.
Later, the IG Islamabad appeared before the court, and CJP Isa deemed the complaint “completely intolerable.” He ordered the IG to address the matter immediately and, if necessary, take disciplinary action.
CJP Isa questioned the IG about the reasons for the police visit to Gohar’s house. The IG explained they had a tip-off about proclaimed offenders, but upon realizing it was Gohar’s residence, they withdrew.
The CJP instructed the IG to personally investigate the incident, name the proclaimed offenders, and submit a report to the Kohsar Police Station. He emphasized the seriousness of the matter and the need for citizens’ full protection.
In conclusion, CJP Isa noted that if Barrister Gohar remains dissatisfied, the court should be informed. The situation highlights the delicate balance between law enforcement actions and citizens’ rights, prompting the court to intervene and seek accountability.
