New Zealand and India have secured their places in the semi-finals of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 after dominant performances in the group stage, officially ending Pakistan’s campaign in the tournament, which continues until March 9.
Pakistan’s Struggles in the Group Stage
Pakistan, the defending champions and hosts, began their title defense against New Zealand, a team that had already beaten them twice in a recent tri-nation ODI series featuring South Africa.
Batting first in the tournament opener, New Zealand posted a formidable 320/5, powered by centuries from opener Will Young and wicketkeeper-batter Tom Latham. Pakistan’s bowlers struggled to contain the opposition, with Naseem Shah being the standout performer, claiming 2/63 in his 10 overs. However, Haris Rauf proved expensive, conceding 83 runs in his full quota.
In reply, Pakistan’s batting lineup faltered and was bowled out for 260 in 47.2 overs. All-rounder Khushdil Shah top-scored with 69 off 49 balls, while Babar Azam contributed a scratchy 64 from 90 deliveries.
Defeat Against India Seals Pakistan’s Fate
Facing arch-rivals India in a must-win encounter in Dubai, Pakistan’s batting unit underperformed again, managing only 241 before being dismissed in the final over. Saud Shakeel was the leading scorer with a cautious 62 off 76 balls, hitting five boundaries.
India’s left-arm spinner Kuldeep Yadav was instrumental in dismantling Pakistan’s lineup, finishing with figures of 3/40 in nine overs. Chasing 242, India comfortably reached the target with four wickets in hand and 45 balls to spare, thanks to Virat Kohli’s match-winning century.
After two consecutive defeats, Pakistan’s chances of advancing to the semi-finals were slim, relying on other Group A match results. However, New Zealand’s victory over Bangladesh confirmed Pakistan’s exit from the tournament.
Despite being eliminated from the semi-finals, Pakistan will play their final group-stage match against Bangladesh on February 27 in Rawalpindi.
