Federal Minister for Railways Muhammad Hanif Abbasi inaugurated Pakistan’s first Safe and Smart Railway Station in Rawalpindi, marking a significant step toward modernizing the country’s rail network. Speaking to the media at the inauguration ceremony, the minister said the initiative reflects the government’s commitment to building a modern, safe, and passenger-friendly railway system under the Prime Minister’s vision of infrastructure modernization.
Rawalpindi Leads with Smart Monitoring and Security System
Rawalpindi has become the first railway station in Pakistan to be equipped with a comprehensive smart monitoring system, featuring 143 high-tech surveillance cameras installed throughout the premises. The new setup enables 24/7 monitoring of the station, reservation offices, and surrounding areas to enhance passenger security and operational efficiency.
Minister Abbasi stated that the system would not only strengthen security measures but also help ensure better supervision of railway staff and smoother service management. He emphasized that similar upgrades will soon be introduced at major stations nationwide, making Pakistan Railways more efficient and user-oriented.
Modern Facilities for Passengers Nationwide
During the visit, Abbasi also inaugurated new passenger lounges and waiting areas at the Rawalpindi station. The upgraded facilities include separate family and women’s lounges, refreshment counters, free Wi-Fi access, and ATM services—a step toward improving travel comfort and convenience.
The minister further announced that refurbished train rakes are being introduced to replace older ones across the network. Three upgraded rakes have already been deployed on the Lahore–Rawalpindi route, with a fourth expected to enter service by mid-November.
Abbasi revealed that the Faisalabad Station renovation has been completed, while the Karachi Cantt terminal’s modernization is in its final stages and will open soon.
“We are committed to transforming Pakistan Railways into a modern, secure, and passenger-focused institution that meets international standards,” Abbasi stated.
The Safe and Smart Railway Station project marks a milestone in the digital transformation of Pakistan Railways, ensuring safer travel and improved passenger experience across the country.
