In a progressive move aimed at improving identity verification and aligning with global practices, the Pakistani government has decided to include the mother’s name in Pakistani passports. Currently, only the father’s name appears on official travel documents, but this will change with the implementation of a new policy.
According to officials from the Passport Directorate, the addition of the mother’s name will simplify verification procedures and help resolve issues faced by citizens—especially in cases where the father is deceased or estranged.
Pakistan Passport Policy Updated to Support Inclusive Identity Standards
Officials noted that the policy reflects modern travel requirements and brings Pakistan’s passport system closer to international standards. The update is expected to reduce bureaucratic hurdles and ensure that more citizens can easily obtain travel and identity documents.
Under the new policy, passport applicants will be required to submit their mother’s name, which will be visibly printed in the personal information section. This move not only supports better identity management but also enhances women’s recognition in official documentation, reaffirming their role in legal identity structures.
Authorities believe the change will strengthen basic rights, especially for individuals relying on maternal lineage for legal documentation.
