Internet users in Pakistan faced widespread disruptions on social media platforms nationwide on Sunday.
The issues emerged around 5:45 pm as users encountered slow or inaccessible connections to various social media platforms, including X (previously known as Twitter), Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube.
Netblocks, an independent monitoring entity, confirmed significant disruptions on a national scale affecting YouTube, Instagram, X, and Facebook.
Despite the widespread impact, the government has not issued any statement addressing the disruptions, leaving citizens perplexed and frustrated.
The timing of the disruption coincided with the PTI’s preparations for launching its election fundraising telethon, although no official connection has been established between the two events.
Level Playing Field Controversy: ECP Debunks PTI’s Accusations
Meanwhile, in response to allegations raised by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) regarding a lack of a level playing field in the upcoming general elections scheduled for February 8, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has firmly rejected the claims. The electoral body, in a reply submitted to the Supreme Court, not only dismissed the PTI’s allegations but also imposed a fine on the party.
The response was prompted by a December 22 directive from the Supreme Court, urging the ECP to promptly address PTI’s grievances and ensure a smooth, transparent, and fair electoral process. The PTI had contended that the electoral body violated Supreme Court directives aimed at maintaining a level playing field during the polls.
The ECP’s reply highlighted a meeting with PTI leaders, held in compliance with the Supreme Court’s directives, assuring the former ruling party of a fair and unbiased electoral environment. The response detailed directives issued to the inspector generals of police in all four provinces, resulting in the registration of 36 complaints by December 26, all of which were addressed.
According to the ECP, the scrutiny of nomination papers further underlines the fairness in the process. Out of the 843 National Assembly seat nomination papers submitted by PTI, 598 were accepted, representing a 76.18% approval rate.
