The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on Monday announced the appointment of former all-rounder Azhar Mahmood as the acting red-ball head coach of the Pakistan men’s team.
Earlier this year, after trying out six head coaches over the past two years without notable improvement in international performances, the PCB had once again advertised the role. Aaqib Javed, who was the last interim coach handling both red-ball and white-ball formats, and who also doubled as a selector, stepped down following the ICC Champions Trophy held between February and March this year.
“Azhar Mahmood has been named as the acting red-ball head coach of the Pakistan men’s team,” the PCB confirmed in a press release.
According to the board, Azhar will continue in this capacity until the completion of his current contract. The PCB described him as a highly experienced cricket strategist who has previously served as the national side’s assistant head coach and played a key role in shaping the team’s strategic plans.
The statement further noted that Azhar’s deep understanding of the game, extensive international experience, and accomplishments in the English county circuit make him particularly qualified for this assignment. His red-ball credentials include winning two County Championship titles—an achievement that highlights his leadership qualities, tactical expertise, and commitment to excellence.
The PCB expressed confidence that Azhar’s leadership will help the red-ball team further strengthen its discipline and performance on the world stage.
Azhar has held multiple coaching roles with the national side over the years, most recently stepping in as head coach for the five-match T20 International series against New Zealand in April last year.
