ISLAMABAD: A special court in Islamabad has sentenced a woman to death for blasphemy over a social media post. Judge Afzal Majoka of the Islamabad Special Court, set up under the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA), delivered the verdict on Thursday.
The woman was convicted under Section 295-C of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC), which mandates the death penalty for blasphemy against the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). In addition to the death sentence, the court imposed a fine of Rs300,000.
She was also sentenced to seven years in prison and fined Rs100,000 under Section 11 of the PECA Act.
The court ordered that she be hanged until death, though she retains the right to appeal the verdict within 30 days.
Earlier this year, the federal government, in consultation with Islamabad High Court Chief Justice Aamer Farooq, established special courts to handle cases under PECA.
