Residents and patients in Gilgit and neighboring areas are set to face travel disruptions as Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) temporarily suspends flights between Gilgit and Islamabad from February 3 to 7. The suspension is a result of technical issues with the ATR aircraft typically servicing this route, leading to its immediate transfer for repairs.
PIA, which operates one to two daily flights between the cities, relies on ATR aircraft known for their capability to navigate short runways and mountainous terrains. Unfortunately, one of these planes has experienced a mechanical problem, necessitating prompt repairs. Due to the limited availability of ATR aircraft for small-sector flights, including those to Gilgit, the airline is unable to provide alternative services during the repair period. One of the two aircraft is currently in operation in the north zone of Islamabad and the south zone of Karachi.
The spokesperson assured that the affected aircraft is expected to resume regular operations to Gilgit on February 8 after the necessary repairs. While safety is paramount, the temporary flight suspension poses challenges for passengers, especially residents of Gilgit, who heavily rely on this air link for travel and essential services. The incident underscores the drawbacks of depending on a single type of aircraft for critical routes.
Passengers with existing bookings are encouraged to reach out to PIA for rescheduling or refund options. The airline may also consider alternative arrangements, such as ground transportation, to minimize inconvenience for travelers during this period.
