Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Friday extended heartfelt congratulations to the global Catholic community on the election of Pope Leo XIV, calling the occasion a symbol of renewed hope and inspiration for millions around the world.
In a message shared via social media, the prime minister stated, “I extend my warm congratulations to the global Catholic community on the election of Pope Leo XIV. This historic moment marks a new chapter of hope and inspiration for millions around the world.”
He underscored that Pakistan cherishes its diplomatic relations with the Holy See and remains steadfast in its efforts to foster interfaith harmony, mutual respect, and a collective pursuit of peace and human dignity.
Pope Leo XIV, previously known as U.S. Cardinal Robert Prevost, was elected on Thursday as the 267th leader of the Roman Catholic Church, following the passing of Pope Francis after a prolonged illness. A dual citizen of the United States and Peru, Pope Leo becomes the first American to ascend to the papacy, reflecting his decades of missionary work in Latin America.
Signals from the New Pontiff
As he made his first appearance on the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica, Pope Leo XIV conveyed three significant messages through his name, his words, and his appearance.
The name “Leo XIV” is widely viewed as an homage to Pope Leo XIII (1878–1903), known for his advocacy of social justice, labor rights, and the Church’s engagement with contemporary issues. The choice is seen as an indication of Pope Leo’s commitment to these principles.
His first public words, “La pace sia con tutti voi!” (“Peace be with you!”), delivered in Italian, reinforced his commitment to peace — echoing calls by other Church leaders to end conflicts in Ukraine, the Middle East, and other regions.
Paying tribute to his predecessor, Pope Leo said, “We still have in our ears that weak, but always courageous voice of Pope Francis,” recalling the final blessing Francis offered before his passing. Pope Leo added a message of reassurance: “God loves us, God loves everyone, and evil will not prevail. We are in the hands of God.”
Balance of Tradition and Reform
While Pope Francis was known for eschewing traditional papal garments, Pope Leo donned a red mozzetta over his white cassock — a subtle signal that he may aim to balance Church traditions with contemporary reform.
Many Church analysts believe that Pope Leo XIV may work to unify conservative and progressive elements within the Church, drawing from both historical traditions and the modern social concerns shaping global Catholicism.
Pakistan and the Holy See
Pakistan has enjoyed diplomatic relations with the Vatican since 1961 and regularly emphasizes interfaith dialogue in its foreign policy. In his statement, Prime Minister Shehbaz reiterated Pakistan’s dedication to fostering understanding between faiths and collaborating on shared values such as peace, compassion, and human dignity.
