The political tensions between the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) appear to be easing as the Punjab government has extended an offer of political space and representation to the PPP, sources told ARY News on Tuesday. The move signals a potential shift toward cooperation after weeks of friction between the two allied parties.
Punjab Govt Reaches Out, Seeks PPP’s Participation
According to PPP insiders, the Punjab government formally initiated contact through Marriyum Aurangzeb, assuring the party of representation in multiple provincial institutions.
Sources revealed that the PPP has been asked to submit names for appointments to various provincial boards. Additionally, the party has been offered positions in provincial committees, including the appointment of law officers, with names already being sought.
The Punjab government has also pledged to restore development funding for PPP lawmakers. PPP sources confirmed that funds for its MPAs would be released, addressing one of the party’s key concerns in the province.
For now, the PPP has requested some time to consider the proposals, indicating that formal acceptance may follow further internal consultations.
Power-Sharing Arrangement Back on the Table
The development comes after Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif assured President Asif Ali Zardari that the federal government would take concrete steps to address PPP’s reservations over the Punjab power-sharing deal. This assurance was given during a meeting at Aiwan-e-Sadr, where both leaders also discussed the broader regional and political situation.
Prime Minister Shehbaz also briefed President Zardari on his recent visits to Egypt and Malaysia, where he advocated for peace in Gaza.
Political analysts say the renewed engagement between PML-N and PPP could help stabilize the coalition setup in Punjab, which has faced strain over stalled commitments and unresolved power-sharing disputes.
