Seat Adjustment
LAHORE: In a significant political development, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q) have announced their decision to engage in seat adjustment ahead of the upcoming general elections scheduled for February 8 next year.
The breakthrough occurred as PML-N leader Nawaz Sharif made a noteworthy visit to the residence of PML-Q President Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain in Lahore, marking their first encounter in nearly 15 years, according to sources.
During the approximately 40-minute meeting, the two political heavyweights discussed the prospect of forming an electoral alliance. Consequently, they decided to establish separate committees to finalize the details of the arrangement. Accompanying Nawaz Sharif were PML-N President Shehbaz Sharif and other prominent leaders, including Maryam Nawaz, Rana Sanaullah, Ayaz Sadiq, and Azam Nazeer Tarar.
PML-Q leaders Chaudhry Wajahat Hussain, Chaudhry Salik Hussain, and Shafay Hussain were also present during the crucial meeting. Sources revealed that the parties have reached an agreement on seat adjustments for two National Assembly and three Punjab Assembly constituencies.
The seat adjustments specifically include constituencies represented by PML-Q leader Tariq Bashir Cheema and Salik, along with Shafay’s provincial assembly constituency. Notably, no official statement was released following the meeting.
This development unfolds amidst escalating political activity as parties intensify their election campaigns and forge alliances to strengthen their positions in the upcoming elections. Nawaz Sharif, the three-time former prime minister, returned to Pakistan in October after nearly four years of exile in London, aiming to energize his supporters ahead of the crucial February elections.
Since his return, Nawaz Sharif has garnered significant legal relief in corruption references, with his party viewing them as politically motivated. Additionally, he has successfully attracted influential figures from Balochistan to join the PML-N ranks and formed an electoral alliance with the Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P).
