Massive Project Aims to Boost Digital Security and Combat Sophisticated Cyber Threats
ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has initiated a comprehensive firewall renewal and upgrade project designed to significantly enhance the nation’s cybersecurity infrastructure and protect its critical digital systems from growing cyber threats.
According to official sources, the project’s budget is estimated between Rs40 million and Rs120 million, depending on the selected firewall models, software subscriptions, and overall deployment scale. Once completed, the upgraded system will offer greater visibility, control, and resilience across Pakistan’s telecom and digital networks, which have increasingly become targets of sophisticated cyberattacks.
The renewal plan covers the installation of next-generation firewalls (NGFWs) at PTA headquarters and regional offices nationwide. The upgrade also includes the renewal of security licenses, integration with PTA’s data centers and monitoring units, and the implementation of modern network protection systems.
Advanced Firewall Features and Nationwide Integration
The next-generation firewalls will feature intrusion prevention systems (IPS), advanced malware protection, SSL inspection, VPN security, and web filtering capabilities. These features are designed to block unauthorized access, detect intrusion attempts, and strengthen real-time monitoring across the PTA’s entire digital framework.
In addition, the upgraded system will include centralized management consoles for streamlined network control and active-passive failover configurations to ensure uninterrupted service continuity. The PTA also plans to integrate the new firewall with the National Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT) for enhanced real-time coordination on cyber incidents.
The project will be executed in multiple phases, starting with a detailed assessment of the current infrastructure, followed by procurement, installation, configuration, and staff training. A post-deployment maintenance phase is also part of the plan, which will ensure 24/7 vendor support and continuous security updates for three to five years.
This upgrade marks a significant step toward fortifying Pakistan’s digital ecosystem, reinforcing cyber resilience, and aligning the country’s network security with international best practices.
