LAHORE/ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Vice Chairman Shah Mahmood Qureshi, Senator Ejaz Chaudhry, and 19 others were formally indicted in the Race Course case during a jail trial held at Kot Lakhpat Jail on Monday.
The proceedings, overseen by a special judge of the Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC), also included the indictment of former Governor Umar Sarfraz Cheema and other key figures in the case.
The case revolves around allegations of violence and unrest linked to political protests. While the specific charges were not disclosed during the hearing, the indictment signifies a pivotal step in the judicial process.
The court has summoned witnesses to testify at the next hearing, marking the beginning of the evidence presentation phase in the trial.
Meanwhile, an Additional District and Sessions Judge has extended the interim bail of former Prime Minister Imran Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi, in the Toshakhana fake receipts case until December 7.
The case was heard by Judge Muhammad Afzal Majoka, who presided over six pre-arrest bail applications from Imran Khan and one from Bushra Bibi.
The court exempted Bushra Bibi from appearing in today’s proceedings, while Imran Khan was not presented via video link despite the court’s earlier directive.
During the hearing, the investigation officer sought additional time to verify the Toshakhana receipts.
Imran Khan, founder of the PTI, and Bushra Bibi are accused of producing counterfeit receipts related to the sale of state gifts from Toshakhana. They approached the court seeking pre-arrest bail amidst allegations that Khan is also implicated in cases involving protests, vandalism, and other charges.
