The Punjab Environment Protection and Climate Change Department has announced new emission testing fees for vehicles, which will come into effect from November 10. The initiative aims to control vehicular pollution and encourage regular vehicle maintenance for improved air quality across the province.
Fee Structure Based on Engine Capacity
According to the notification, the emission testing charges will vary according to the vehicle’s engine capacity:
-
Up to 1,000cc: Rs. 500
-
1,001cc to 1,500cc: Rs. 800
-
1,501cc to 2,500cc: Rs. 1,000
-
2,501cc to 4,500cc: Rs. 1,500
-
Above 4,500cc: Rs. 2,000
This tiered structure ensures that larger and more emission-prone vehicles pay higher testing fees, aligning with the government’s efforts to reduce carbon output from high-capacity engines.
Online Payment System Introduced
To streamline the process, motorists are required to pay the emission testing fee online through the Punjab e-Pay system. Once payment is made, a confirmation message will be sent to the user’s registered mobile number, allowing them to proceed with the emission test.
The move towards a digital system aims to eliminate manual paperwork and improve transparency in the testing process.
Testing Requirements for Motorists
Motorists must bring their Computerized National Identity Card (CNIC) at the time of the emission test for verification. The department has instructed all vehicle owners to comply with the new rules to avoid penalties or vehicle registration issues in the future.
Step Toward Cleaner Air in Punjab
The introduction of emission testing fees is part of Punjab’s broader environmental initiative to combat rising air pollution levels, especially during the winter smog season. Authorities believe that regular emission checks will encourage vehicle owners to maintain engines efficiently, reducing smoke emissions and improving air quality across cities like Lahore, Faisalabad, and Rawalpindi.
This policy marks a significant step toward sustainable urban transport and reflects the province’s commitment to achieving cleaner, healthier air for its citizens.
