The driving license system in Punjab is undergoing a major transformation. Authorities have decided to introduce artificial intelligence-powered vehicles that will conduct driving tests with improved transparency and efficiency. This move marks one of the most significant upgrades to the province’s licensing process.
AI Vehicles to Overhaul the Testing Process
Traffic officials said the new AI vehicles will help curb corruption. They explained that the fully automated system will record driving tests in real time. Moreover, each vehicle will use sensors, advanced processors, and high-resolution cameras to monitor every action during the test.
A summary for the procurement of thirty-two AI vehicles has already been submitted to the provincial government. The officials added that the system aims to eliminate human interference and promote fair licensing for all applicants.
Cost and Rollout Plan
The expected cost of the new fleet exceeds one hundred and sixty million rupees. Additionally, the installation of AI systems will add around six hundred thousand rupees to each vehicle.
Two AI vehicles have already completed pilot testing in Lahore. Because the results were encouraging, the upgrade will now expand to major cities across Punjab. Authorities plan to make the system fully operational by December.
Under the new setup, test results will be computerised. Therefore, candidates will receive outcomes generated by the system without manual involvement.
Mobile Licensing Unit Brings Ease for Citizens
A major step has also been taken to improve public access to licensing services. The province has launched its first mobile police station and licensing unit. The initiative aims to reduce the long-standing difficulties faced by citizens during license issuance and renewal.
During the inauguration, the provincial leadership inspected the facility. Officials highlighted that the mobile unit will provide services for FIR registration, license issuance, and renewals. Furthermore, the unit will offer learner, regular, international, and women’s driving licenses.
A New Chapter for Licensing in Punjab
The introduction of AI vehicles and mobile licensing units signals a new era for Punjab’s transport sector. The system is designed to promote fairness, enhance public trust, and modernise the licensing experience for thousands of applicants each month.
With these changes, Punjab is moving toward a more transparent and technology-driven framework that aims to provide reliable and accessible services for all citizens.
