Russian President Vladimir Putin warned on Saturday that Moscow will achieve all its objectives in Ukraine by force if Kyiv continues to reject peace, signaling an escalation in rhetoric amid ongoing fighting in eastern and southern Ukraine. Putin’s remarks, reported by the state news agency TASS, came a day after Russia launched a large-scale drone and missile strike targeting multiple Ukrainian cities.
Putin’s Warning and the Context of the Attack
Putin said Ukraine was showing little interest in resolving the conflict diplomatically. “If Ukraine does not want to resolve issues peacefully, Russia will achieve all its goals by force,” he said. The statement follows nearly four years of conflict that began with Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky criticized the strikes, calling them evidence of Russia’s determination to continue the war, while Kyiv remains committed to pursuing peace.
Zelensky is scheduled to meet US President Donald Trump in Florida on Sunday to discuss possible avenues for de-escalation. The White House had not responded immediately to requests for comment regarding Putin’s statements.
Russian Claims of Territory Gains
During a visit to frontline positions, Russian commanders informed Putin that Russian forces had captured several towns in eastern and southern Ukraine. According to the Kremlin’s Telegram channel, Russian troops seized Myrnohrad, Rodynske, and Artemivka in Donetsk, as well as Huliaipole and Stepnohirsk in Zaporizhzhia.
However, Ukraine’s military dismissed claims regarding Huliaipole and Myrnohrad as false. The General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces stated that while the situation in these areas remains challenging, Ukrainian troops continue “defensive operations” to hold territory.
Fighting Continues in Key Areas
Ukraine’s Southern Command reported that “fierce fighting” persists in Huliaipole, but a significant portion of the town remains under Ukrainian control. The report emphasized that defensive operations are ongoing, and Russian advances have not led to a complete takeover of the contested areas.
Challenges in Verifying Claims
Independent verification of territorial gains in Ukraine is difficult. Both sides tightly control access to frontlines, and media outlets rely on satellite imagery and geolocated footage, which can be partial, delayed, or influenced by propaganda. The fluid nature of the conflict means front lines shift rapidly, making real-time confirmation of gains and losses challenging.
Analysts warn that Russian statements about captured towns may serve as both a domestic messaging tool and a signal to Kyiv, reinforcing Moscow’s determination to continue military operations if diplomatic solutions fail.
The ongoing conflict continues to cause humanitarian strain, with civilians in contested areas facing displacement, infrastructure damage, and limited access to essential services. International actors remain focused on pushing for dialogue, but the situation on the ground remains volatile.
