Adviser to the Prime Minister on Political Affairs, Senator Rana Sanaullah, stated on Thursday that those who “harmed Pakistan in the past may face accountability” when the appropriate time comes. Speaking on Geo News’ morning show Geo Pakistan, Sanaullah emphasized that while accountability is important, the current focus should remain on working for the betterment of the country.
His remarks followed comments by former Prime Minister and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) President Nawaz Sharif, who recently asserted that Pakistan’s challenges stemmed not only from Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan but also from “those who brought him to power.”
Speaking to newly elected parliamentarians in Lahore, Sharif said that “lies, abuse, indecency, immorality, and chaos” had been defeated in the recent by-elections. He added that the PTI government had brought Pakistan’s economy and diplomacy to the brink of collapse, and those responsible, including individuals who enabled Khan’s rise, should be held accountable.
Sanaullah, reflecting on the by-election victory in Haripur, expressed “joy and surprise,” noting the active campaigning and alleged intimidation by the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa chief minister in the constituency.
He further criticized the previous government’s economic record, highlighting that inflation, which stood at 3% in 2017, had surged to 40% within four years, attributing the country’s economic decline to the “launch of the Imran Khan project.”
Regarding the government’s efforts to provide relief to citizens, Sanaullah explained that measures are constrained by the conditions of the International Monetary Fund (IMF). “Once the IMF programme is completed, we will be able to give relief to the people,” he said.
He cautioned that continuing the politics of “abuse, false cases, and hatred” would yield no positive outcomes. Sanaullah emphasized that the government’s priority remains the progress of Pakistan and ensuring that citizens experience ease in their daily lives. While accountability for past wrongs remains on the horizon, the present focus, he reiterated, must be on stabilizing and improving the nation for its people.
