WASHINGTON: A record number of journalists were killed globally in 2024, according to the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), with Israel being responsible for nearly 70% of the fatalities.
The CPJ’s latest report revealed that at least 124 journalists across 18 countries lost their lives, making 2024 the deadliest year for reporters and media workers since the committee began tracking these figures over 30 years ago. The majority of these deaths, 85 in total, occurred in the context of the Israel-Gaza conflict, with the Israeli military being implicated in the killings.
The CPJ also criticized Israel for attempting to suppress investigations, shifting blame onto journalists, and failing to hold those responsible accountable for these deaths. In response, the Israeli military stated that insufficient information was provided about the incidents, preventing it from verifying the claims.
This tragic rise in fatalities marks a significant increase from previous years, with 102 journalists killed in 2023 and 69 in 2022. CPJ CEO Jodie Ginsberg noted that Sudan and Pakistan had the second-highest toll of journalist deaths in 2024.
