Kurram DC
The delivery of much-needed relief items to the violence-stricken Kurram district in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa was suspended on Saturday after a tragic attack left Deputy Commissioner (DC) Javedullah Mehsud critically injured.
The incident occurred near the Bagan area, where unidentified assailants opened fire on the convoy in which the DC was traveling.
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government spokesperson Barrister Muhammad Ali Saif confirmed the attack in an official statement, revealing that six others were also injured.
Among the wounded are three security personnel, according to local sources. The injured DC was initially rushed to Lower Alizai Hospital for emergency medical care. Given the severity of his injuries, authorities plan to airlift him to Peshawar for advanced treatment.
The attack has further exacerbated security concerns in the troubled region. Intermittent gunfire was reported in the Baggan area of Lower Kurram, adding to the already volatile situation.
The Kohat Regional Police Officer confirmed the incident, stating that the firing did not originate from any known groups involved in the ongoing violence.
Instead, it was attributed to unidentified assailants. A search operation is currently underway to locate and apprehend the perpetrators.
In the wake of this incident, the district administration has decided to temporarily delay the dispatch of the relief convoy. Initially scheduled to depart from the Tall tehsil in Hangu, the convoy has yet to begin its journey.
Officials have indicated that its departure will depend on further consultations and a comprehensive assessment of the security situation.
The suspension of relief efforts has heightened concerns for the residents of Kurram, who have already endured significant hardships due to ongoing violence.
Authorities have assured the public that efforts are being made to ensure the safe delivery of aid, but the attack underscores the immense challenges faced in restoring peace and stability in the region.
