West Indies cricket stalwart Andre Russell bid farewell to international cricket on Tuesday, but his emotional final game ended in disappointment as Australia crushed the hosts by eight wickets in the second T20I of the five-match series. The match, played in front of Russell’s home crowd, was meant to be a celebratory send-off, but the visitors’ clinical performance denied him a storybook ending.
Batting first, West Indies posted 172 for 8, with opener Brandon King scoring a quickfire 51 and Russell entertaining the crowd one last time with a blistering 36 off just 15 balls. However, it wasn’t enough to hold off a resurgent Australian side that made light work of the chase.
Josh Inglis and Cameron Green led Australia’s response with an unbeaten 131-run stand. Inglis hammered 78 off 33 balls, including five sixes, while Green followed up his previous performance with another commanding knock of 56*. Their ruthless partnership sealed the match in just 15.2 overs, handing Australia a 2-0 series lead.
West Indies’ sloppy fielding also contributed to their downfall, with six dropped catches proving costly.
Inglis, Green Shine as Australia Eyes Series Sweep
Australia experimented with Glenn Maxwell and Mitchell Marsh as openers, but both were dismissed early after scoring 12 and 21, respectively. The early blows did little to deter Inglis and Green, who adapted brilliantly to the conditions. Player of the Match Josh Inglis acknowledged his early luck after being dropped but credited the duo’s strategic approach against spin and pace for the win.
“We knew spin was going to be tricky on this pitch,” Inglis noted. “So, we absorbed pressure during the middle overs and then counter-attacked against the fast bowlers.”
Despite the loss, 37-year-old Russell expressed gratitude for the opportunity to finish his international career in front of a home crowd. “The result didn’t go my way, but I’m happy and grateful,” he said. “I wish the boys all the best going forward.”
Australia, having already swept the Test series 3-0, will aim to seal the T20 series with a third straight win in Basseterre on Saturday.
