SRI LANKA: A nationwide power outage hit Sri Lanka on Sunday after a monkey caused a disruption at an electrical grid substation, government officials reported.
The blackout began around 11:30 am (0600 GMT) and lasted for over three hours, with electricity not fully restored at the time.
Energy Minister Kumara Jayakody explained that the monkey had come into contact with a transformer, causing an imbalance in the system.
The incident took place in a suburban area south of Colombo, with some regions seeing power restored, though the full scope and duration of the outage were still unclear.
“Engineers are working to restore power as quickly as possible,” Jayakody said.
This incident follows a series of severe blackouts Sri Lanka experienced in the summer of 2022, when the country faced an economic crisis that resulted in fuel and electricity shortages.
