Sugar prices in Pakistan have hit an all-time high of Rs180 per kilogram in major cities, adding to the financial strain on consumers during the holy month of Ramazan.
According to the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS), the price of sugar has increased by Rs14.22 per kilogram, with Rawalpindi, Islamabad, and Karachi witnessing the highest prices.
Other cities such as Quetta, Gujranwala, Sialkot, Lahore, and Peshawar are experiencing sugar prices ranging from Rs175 to Rs176 per kilogram.
Despite the price hike, sources suggest that Pakistan’s sugar reserves are sufficient to last until October 2025. By February, 56 million tons of sugarcane had been processed, producing 5.3 million tons of sugar.
The government has exported 741,000 metric tons of sugar and currently holds reserves of 400,000 to 500,000 tons with sugar mills. Inflation continues to rise, with the PBS reporting a 0.22% increase in the Sensitive Price Indicator (SPI) for the week ending March 13.
