IMF executive board is holding its meeting today (Aug 29) in Washington to consider for approval resumption of loan to Pakistan.
On Friday (Aug 26), the last working day of this week, the US dollar is expected to stop its unbridled flight temporarily as the executive board of the International Monetary Fund is scheduled to meet on August 29 to consider for approval the disbursement of $1.17 billion to Pakistan.
In the last five trading days, the rate of US dollar has edged up in the inter-bank to 218.50 rupees, from 212 rupees while in the open market the dollar-rupee parity has crossed 223 rupees level, from 210 rupees.
Miftah pointed out that the government was imposing 36 billion rupees further tax on cigarettes sector.
The IMF suspended its programme in February 2022 when the PTI-led government announced untargeted fuel and electricity subsidies.
Miftah said the disbursement of IMF loan will pave the way for economic stability in the country.
Finance Minister Miftah Ismail and Acting Governor, State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) Murtaza Syed will sign the LoI which will be sent back to the IMF.
