Federal Troops Directed to Use Full Force if Needed
US President Donald Trump has ordered the deployment of military troops to Portland, Oregon. The directive was issued to protect federal immigration facilities from what he described as attacks by “domestic terrorists.” Trump stated that troops are authorised to use “full force, if necessary.”
The President instructed Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth to mobilise forces for protecting war-torn Portland and ICE facilities under threat from groups like Antifa. The Department of Homeland Security confirmed the action, saying troops are on standby to support local operations.
Local Leaders Reject Military Presence
Portland officials were not informed in advance. Mayor Keith Wilson strongly opposed the move, saying, “The number of necessary troops is zero.” Governor Tina Kotek also rejected the deployment, stating there is no threat to national security. She confirmed a direct conversation with Trump and Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem urging a reconsideration.
Crime in Portland has been declining. According to recent data, homicides dropped by 51% in early 2025. Local leaders argue there is no basis for military involvement. Senator Ron Wyden accused Trump of repeating his 2020 tactics to provoke unrest.
ICE Facilities Targeted Amid Immigration Crackdown
Tensions have escalated in several cities following a recent shooting at an ICE facility in Dallas. DHS cited this violence as justification for increased security. Portland’s ICE centre has already seen a rise in federal law enforcement presence.
Trump continues to target Antifa, recently signing an executive order labelling it a terrorist organisation. Despite this, no antifa-related terror incidents have been confirmed by law enforcement.
Critics warn the administration’s immigration and crime policies are intensifying protests nationwide.
