US President Donald Trump has warned that any nation aligning with the “anti‑American policies” of the BRICS bloc will face an additional 10 % tariff on imports to the US, with “no exceptions,” he stated in a Truth Social post.
At their summit in Rio de Janeiro, BRICS leaders—including Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, and newer members—criticized “unilateral tariff and non‑tariff measures” without naming the US or Trump directly. They called these actions “indiscriminate” and inconsistent with WTO rules. The bloc, which represents roughly half the world’s population and 40 % of economic output, warned that such moves threaten global trade and economic stability.
Trump’s announcement coincides with the end of a 90‑day pause on previously imposed higher tariffs set last April. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said countries failing to strike trade deals by August 1 will see tariffs revert to April levels, potentially including the extra 10 % for BRICS‑aligned nations.
Only a few countries—such as the UK, China, and Vietnam—have secured deals thus far, leaving major economies like the EU, Japan, and South Korea vulnerable to renewed levies.
Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick noted that while Trump has been vague on specifics, letters notifying countries of new tariffs will go out by July 9, with duties taking effect August 1 unless agreements are reached.
