Waseem, Sharafu Shine with the Bat
United Arab Emirates bounced back strongly in the 2025 Men’s Asia Cup T20, securing a dominant 42-run victory over Oman in Abu Dhabi on Monday. The win keeps UAE’s hopes alive for a Super Four qualification, setting up a key clash against Pakistan next.
Leading from the front, UAE skipper Muhammad Waseem smashed 69, while opening partner Alishan Sharafu struck a brisk 51, helping the hosts post a competitive 172-5 after being put in to bat. The pair shared an 88-run stand for the first wicket, shifting momentum after a cautious start with a series of attacking strokes, including multiple boundaries and sixes.
Sharafu was dismissed after completing his half-century, while Waseem brought up his 50 in style with a six before getting run out in the final over. The middle order added valuable runs in the death overs, giving the bowlers a strong total to defend.
UAE Bowlers Dominate as Oman Collapse
Oman faltered early in their chase, losing five wickets for just 50 runs. Captain Jatinder Singh top-scored with 20, but lacked support from the rest of the batting order. The team eventually folded for 130 in 18.4 overs, succumbing to their second consecutive defeat in the tournament.
For UAE, Junaid Siddique was the standout, claiming 4 wickets for 23 runs, while Haider Ali and Muhammad Jawadullah chipped in with two wickets each to seal a convincing win.
UAE now turn their focus to Wednesday’s crucial encounter against Pakistan. A win could secure them a place in the Super Four stage of the eight-nation event. Defending champions India, with two wins from two, lead Group A and are all but confirmed to advance.
The Asia Cup also serves as a key preparatory event for the T20 World Cup set to be co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka in early 2026.
