Senior US officials have directed strong criticism at Israel’s actions in the Gaza war as the UN Security Council prepares for a meeting on a resolution for a ceasefire. Despite warnings from the US to Israel, the passage of the resolution is deemed unlikely.
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken emphasized the need for Israel to prioritize civilian protection, citing a gap between intent and actual results. President Joe Biden stressed the protection of civilians in calls with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Jordan’s King Abdullah.
However, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin reiterated enduring support for Israel’s right to self-defense in a call with his Israeli counterpart. The UN and rights groups have criticized Israel’s assault, with calls for a ceasefire intensifying. The UNSC is set to vote on a resolution drafted by the UAE, urging an immediate humanitarian ceasefire.
Despite UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres invoking Article 99 to warn of a global threat, skepticism exists regarding the resolution’s success, with the US expected to veto it. Critics argue that the US, by initially supporting Israel, has put itself in a challenging position and enabled Israel’s actions.
Palestinian Authority Is Working With Israel On A Post-War Plan To Govern Gaza: PM Shtayyeh
Meanwhile, Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammad Shtayyeh has revealed that the Palestinian Authority is collaborating with US officials on a post-war plan for governing Gaza.
Shtayyeh expressed a desire for the preferred resolution of the conflict to involve Hamas, the current controller of Gaza, becoming a subordinate partner within the Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO).
This collaboration aims to contribute to the establishment of a new independent state encompassing the West Bank, Gaza, and East Jerusalem.
Shtayyeh said that if Hamas is willing to reach an agreement and align with the PLO’s political platform, negotiations could take place.
Emphasizing the importance of Palestinian unity, Shtayyeh dismissed Israel’s unrealistic goal of completely defeating Hamas, asserting that the group cannot be eradicated.
