Focus on training, joint exercises, and aircraft maintenance as both air forces aim to deepen cooperation
ISLAMABAD: In a significant move to boost bilateral military ties, South African Air Force (SAAF) Chief Lt General Wiseman Simo Mbambo visited Pakistan and held high-level talks with Pakistan Air Force (PAF) Chief Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmed Baber Sidhu at Air Headquarters in Islamabad.
The visit began with a ceremonial Guard of Honour, presented by a well-turned-out PAF contingent, according to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR).
During the meeting, both sides expressed a strong commitment to institutionalising and enhancing cooperation between the two air forces. Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Sidhu reaffirmed PAF’s dedication to assisting the SAAF in training, capacity building, and technical collaboration, noting the shared values and historical ties between Pakistan and South Africa.
Training, Exercises, and Technical Support at the Forefront
A major highlight of the discussions was SAAF’s interest in revamping its training regime with the support of the PAF. Lt Gen Mbambo sought Pakistan’s assistance in developing a modern, academy-level training framework and requested that SAAF officers be allowed to observe PAF’s operational exercises to promote mutual learning and cooperation.
Lt Gen Mbambo also praised PAF’s operational readiness and its capabilities across multi-domain warfare, lauding the force’s reputation for excellence and credible deterrence.
In a bid to expand technical ties, the South African Air Force chief expressed interest in having PAF inspect and maintain SAAF’s C-130 fleet, citing the PAF’s cost-effective and technically superior engineering infrastructure.
Path Forward for Deeper Defence Cooperation
Both air chiefs agreed on the need to formalise military-to-military engagements, paving the way for deeper strategic collaboration in aviation training, joint drills, and technical support.
The visit marks a promising step toward enhanced interoperability, technical exchange, and long-term defence cooperation between the Pakistan and South African air forces.
