China has successfully completed the final load test of the Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge, soon to be recognized as the world’s tallest bridge. Located in Guizhou province, the bridge will officially open to traffic in late September and is expected to transform regional connectivity.
Engineering Marvel in Southwest China
Construction of the Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge began in 2022. The structure stretches 2,890 meters in length with a main span of 1,420 meters. Rising 625 meters above the canyon floor, it will set a new record as the tallest bridge in the world. Additionally, it will become the largest span bridge ever constructed in a mountainous region.
The project crosses the dramatic Huajiang Grand Canyon, also known as the “earth crack.” Upon completion, the bridge will reduce travel time across the canyon. The journey will drop from two hours to just one minute. This achievement marks a milestone for efficiency and represents a major innovation in engineering.
Load Test with 96 Heavy Trucks
Before welcoming public traffic, the bridge underwent a rigorous five-day load test to ensure safety. Engineers positioned 96 trucks at different points across the structure. These trucks applied controlled pressure to measure stress, displacement, stiffness, and dynamic performance in the main span, towers, cables, and suspenders.
The results confirmed that the bridge met all required safety standards. The testing process validated the structural strength and long-term reliability of this engineering achievement.
Surpassing France’s Millau Viaduct
The Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge surpasses the Millau Viaduct in France by 947 feet, making it the tallest bridge in the world. This achievement highlights China’s continued leadership in bridge construction and infrastructure development.
Guizhou province has already earned global recognition for its infrastructure projects. Nearly half of the world’s 100 tallest bridges are located in this region, reflecting both its challenging terrain and China’s advanced engineering expertise.
