Zohran Mamdani, the 33-year-old state assembly member and Democratic Party nominee, is maintaining a clear lead in the New York City mayoral race. With Mayor Eric Adams suspending his reelection bid, the contest now centers on Mamdani and former Governor Andrew Cuomo.
A recent Marist University poll indicated Mamdani has 45 percent support, compared with 24 percent for Cuomo. Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa followed with 17 percent, while Adams polled at 9 percent before exiting. With five weeks until Election Day, analysts suggest Mamdani’s position remains strong.
Adams’ Exit Shifts Dynamics but Mamdani Still Favored
Eric Adams confirmed on Sunday that he would not continue his campaign for a second term. His independent candidacy had been weakened by ongoing corruption allegations and a federal indictment. Although Adams pleaded not guilty, the case damaged his credibility.
His departure simplifies the race, but political observers argue it is unlikely to change the outcome significantly. A Marist poll released earlier in September, which accounted for Adams’ potential exit, showed Mamdani holding 46 percent support compared with 30 percent for Cuomo and 18 percent for Sliwa.
Mamdani Gains From Endorsements and Grassroots Donations
Mamdani’s candidacy gained momentum after his upset victory in the June primary. Since then, he has secured endorsements from prominent figures such as Governor Kathy Hochul and former Vice President Kamala Harris.
Financially, Mamdani has outpaced Cuomo by raising $15 million through record small-donor contributions. In contrast, Cuomo reported $9 million in funding, much of it from larger donors. Mamdani’s reliance on grassroots fundraising has reinforced his progressive image and broadened his voter appeal.
Trump’s Attacks May Strengthen Mamdani’s Base
Former President Donald Trump has repeatedly targeted Mamdani, labeling him a “fake communist” and claiming he depends on federal funds. However, experts suggest these attacks may backfire in New York City, where many voters oppose Trump’s policies.
Political analyst Christina Greer noted that Trump’s criticism could galvanize Mamdani’s supporters. She argued that Trump’s interference highlights the sharp contrast between Washington’s agenda and Mamdani’s progressive platform focused on affordability and equity.
Cuomo Hopes to Attract Business Donors After Adams’ Withdrawal
Despite trailing in the polls, Cuomo remains a formidable contender. His independent run follows his resignation as governor in 2021 over sexual harassment allegations. With Adams out, Cuomo may gain renewed support from wealthy business donors who oppose Mamdani’s progressive economic policies.
A pro-Cuomo political action committee, Fix the City, previously attracted millions in contributions. According to campaign sources, the PAC has already seen a surge in interest from donors since Adams’ announcement.
Voter Concerns Remain Centered on Affordability
At a recent campaign event, Mamdani emphasized that Adams’ withdrawal does not alter the challenges faced by New Yorkers. He pointed out that affordability, housing, and cost of living remain central issues. Mamdani stressed that his focus is on addressing these struggles, rather than political maneuvering.
With Election Day approaching, Mamdani continues to command a significant lead in polls. While Cuomo may benefit from increased donor activity, analysts agree that Mamdani’s grassroots momentum and endorsements provide him with a decisive edge.
