The two American Muslims _ Muhammad Aziz and Khalil Islam will be given $36 million as compensation for their wrong conviction in murder of Malcolm X.
Malcolm was assassinated in 1965 and Aziz and Khalil Islam were jailed though in 2021 the Supreme Court of the united States declared their conviction a ‘failure of justice.’
Muhammad Aziz and Khalil Islam always denied the murder allegation of Malcolm X.
According to media, Muhammad Aziz, now 84, sought $40 million compensation after serving 20 years in jail and over 55 years after being wrongly blamed in the case. The verdict of the case had raised questions in the United States about racism in the criminal justice system.
Khalil Islam, who died in 2009 at age 74, also remained in prison for over two decades. However, in Nov 2021, he was exonerated from the murder charge of Malcolm X. His family members have sought $40 million compensation.
In fact, in the mid-1980s, both were released but their names were not fully cleared from the murder charge until November 2021. The apex court in New York has termed their conviction “a failure of justice”.
