Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Barrister Gohar has strongly criticized the government for its failure to appoint a new Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) and fill vacant positions within the Election Commission. Addressing the media outside the Election Commission, Gohar pointed out that the Prime Minister is constitutionally obligated to consult the opposition leader and propose three candidates for the CEC position. However, he stated that this procedure has yet to be followed.
Gohar emphasized the importance of adhering to constitutional requirements, which stipulate that these vacancies must be filled within 45 days. He stressed that delays in appointing key officials are detrimental to the functioning of the Election Commission and the electoral process.
Despite the ongoing discussions, Barrister Gohar clarified that no final decision has been made regarding the new CEC. However, he assured that PTI would submit names for the position once the parliamentary committee is formed. He urged the government to promptly fulfill its constitutional duties and avoid any further delays in the appointments. The failure to fill the vacancies, according to Gohar, undermines the transparency and credibility of the electoral process in Pakistan.
The delay in appointing the new CEC has raised concerns among political leaders and citizens, as it hampers the functioning of the Election Commission at a critical time. Gohar’s remarks underscore the importance of maintaining constitutional timelines to ensure a fair and transparent electoral process.
