US President Joe Biden expressed that the establishment of an independent Palestinian state was not out of the realm of possibility while Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was in office. The two leaders had discussed the matter during their recent conversation.
When asked if a two-state solution to the long-standing Middle East conflict, rooted in Israel’s occupation of historic Palestine, was “impossible” with Netanyahu in power, Biden responded, “No, it’s not.”
He emphasized that Netanyahu did not reject all two-state solutions and that there were various types possible, noting that some United Nations members lack military forces.
During the call, Biden urged Netanyahu on the importance of recognizing Palestinian sovereignty, highlighting the need for Tel Aviv’s acknowledgment.
The President affirmed his strong belief in a two-state solution, asserting it as the right path forward for both Israelis and Palestinians. The call occurred amid tensions over post-Gaza war plans.
US National Security Council spokesman John Kirby stated that Biden still believes in the promise and possibility of a two-state solution. He emphasized that the President conveyed his conviction to Netanyahu during their discussion and reiterated the commitment to advocate for this perspective.
The call addressed the issue of US hostages still held by Hamas since the October 7 attack on Israel.
Additionally, the discussion touched on the ongoing negotiations in Congress for supplemental funding, including the proposed $14 billion for Israel, part of the $3.8 billion in annual military aid the United States provides to the country.
