ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad High Court, presided over by Justice Sardar Ijaz Ishaq Khan, conducted a hearing on a petition seeking the release of Dr. Aafia Siddiqui from a U.S. prison and her repatriation to Pakistan.
During the proceedings, the court was informed that Dr. Aafia Siddiqui’s clemency appeal had been denied by former U.S. President Joe Biden. It was further revealed that the United States had declined to consider any prisoner exchange agreement with Pakistan.
Dr. Fauzia Siddiqui, along with her U.S. lawyer Clive Smith, joined the hearing via video link. The petitioner’s lawyer, Imran Shafiq, and the additional attorney general were also present in court.
Justice Khan expressed concern over the U.S. decision, remarking that it appeared to assert its authority by rejecting clemency for Dr. Aafia Siddiqui. He pointed out that while President Biden had pardoned his own son, he had not acted to secure the release of a Pakistani prisoner.
A report was submitted detailing the foreign visits of Pakistan’s Prime Minister and Foreign Minister. Additionally, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs presented a response addressing the court’s queries about the absence of Pakistan’s ambassador during critical meetings regarding Dr. Aafia Siddiqui’s case.
The court adjourned the hearing for two weeks, allowing further deliberation on the matter.
