The abrupt dismissal of Librarian of Congress Carla Hayden by President Donald Trump has sparked an intense backlash from Democratic leaders, who condemned the move as part of a broader campaign to politicize and purge federal institutions.
Hayden, who made history as the first woman and the first African American to lead the Library of Congress, was informed of her termination via email from the White House Presidential Personnel Office. The message, obtained by the Associated Press, stated: “On behalf of President Donald J. Trump, I am writing to inform you that your position as the Librarian of Congress is terminated effective immediately. Thank you for your service.”
Appointed by President Barack Obama and confirmed by the Senate in 2016, Hayden had served nearly a decade in the role and was widely respected across political lines for her leadership in modernizing the Library and expanding access to its vast collections.
Her firing comes amid growing right-wing criticism of her tenure, led most recently by the American Accountability Foundation (AAF), a conservative group that accused her of promoting what it called “radical” children’s literature and works critical of Trump. The group labeled Hayden “woke” and “anti-Trump,” and quickly celebrated her removal online.
Democratic leaders reacted swiftly and forcefully. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries called the firing “unjust,” accusing Trump of trying to “ban books, whitewash American history, and turn back the clock on progress.” Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer praised Hayden as a “trailblazer,” declaring, “Enough is enough.”
Other lawmakers echoed the outrage. Representative Rosa DeLauro called the decision “callous,” while Rep. Joseph Morelle demanded answers from the White House. Senator Martin Heinrich said the firing marked an escalation in what he described as Trump’s “assault on America’s libraries.”
Hayden’s removal adds to growing concerns among critics that Trump and his allies are targeting key cultural and educational institutions in a broader effort to reshape the federal bureaucracy along ideological lines.
