The federal government has dismissed Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) Director General Ahmed Ishaque Jehangir and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) Inspector General of Police Akhtar Hayat, citing serious administrative shortcomings, officials confirmed on Monday.
Jehangir has been reassigned as an Officer on Special Duty (OSD) in the Establishment Division. His removal follows concerns over human trafficking, particularly the FIA’s delayed response to recent migrant boat tragedies.
Pakistan has witnessed several fatal migrant incidents in recent months, including a boat capsizing off the Moroccan coast earlier this month, which claimed at least 50 lives, mostly Pakistanis. The FIA has faced criticism over its handling of such cases, and sources indicate that the prime minister approved Jehangir’s dismissal due to the sluggish pace of investigations.
Additionally, the government has replaced K-P police chief Akhtar Hayat with Zulfiqar Hameed. Officials pointed to the worsening security situation in the province, particularly escalating violence in Kurram and the inability of law enforcement to maintain order.
In November 2024, Hayat had instructed police officers to avoid involvement in political activities amid Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) protests. His removal follows months of federal dissatisfaction with K-P’s law enforcement performance.
The Establishment Division has begun shortlisting candidates for the new FIA chief, while a formal notification has been issued confirming Hameed’s appointment as the new K-P Inspector General of Police.
