Five members of a family lost their lives, and seven others were injured when a jeep heading towards Jabori veered off the road and plunged into a deep ravine in the Sundi area of Mansehra district, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, on Monday, according to local police.
The mountainous regions of Battal, Shenkiari, and Upper Mansehra are known for their rugged terrain and sharply curved, poorly maintained roads, making traffic accidents a frequent occurrence.
A police officer from Nawazabad stated that the driver lost control of the vehicle, causing it to fall into the ravine. Four individuals died at the scene, while another succumbed to injuries while being transported to the hospital.
Seven other passengers sustained injuries in the crash. They were initially taken to the Shenkiari Rural Health Centre, with those in critical condition later shifted to the King Abdullah Teaching Hospital in Mansehra city for further treatment.
The deceased included three women, a child, and a young man. Police confirmed that nine of the victims — both the deceased and injured — were from the same family, while three others were local residents from nearby villages.
The bodies were handed over to the grieving relatives, and medical care for the injured is ongoing.
Earlier this month, a separate incident in Mansehra involved Japan’s Ambassador to Pakistan, Akamatsu Shuichi, who remained unharmed after the vehicle he was travelling in experienced brake failure and collided with a police escort van, which then fell into a ravine in the Makriha Jandwal area.
